The death toll in Friday's shooting at two mosques in New Zealand has risen by one to 50 people.

New Zealand Police Commissioner Mike Bush announced the latest death in a news conference on Sunday.

He says 36 victims remain in hospital with two of them in critical condition.

Mr Bush also said that two people arrested around the time suspect Brenton Harrison Tarrant was apprehended are not believed to have been involved in the attacks.

The 28-year-old appeared in court Saturday morning amid strict security and showed no emotion when the judge read him one murder charge.

The judge said "it was reasonable to assume" more such charges would follow.

"It is clear that this can now only be described as a terrorist attack," Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said, noting that many of the victims could be migrants or refugees.

It came as it was confirmed a high number of those killed in the attack were foreign nationals from Asian countries, governments around the world confirmed.

Several countries also said a number of their citizens were missing after the largest attack in New Zealand's history.

Bangladesh says three of its citizens are among the dead, another five injured - two seriously.

Jordan's foreign ministry said three people from the Middle East country were killed in the attacks after a wounded man died.

Four Pakistanis were wounded and five are missing, a spokesperson confirmed.

Nine Indians are missing, it was confirmed, with the country's New Zealand-based high commissioner branding the attack a "huge crime against humanity".

Two people from Malaysia and Saudi Arabia were wounded, the countries' embassies confirmed and at least three Turkish citizens were wounded, president Recep Tayyip Erdogan said.

Afghanistan says two people have been reported missing and a third has been treated in hospital.

Indonesia also confirmed two of its citizens were wounded in the attack.
